After years of speculation, Microsoft has finally released some of its well-known Office applications on to Apple’s App Store. The apps have been designed specifically for the iPad to deliver a feature rich experience. The release will help to keep Office as the world’s number one productivity suite as more users adopt iPad and Android based tablets.
The three apps deliver a very feature-rich experience including many familiar functions from the popular desktop version of Office. The performance is generally very smooth and impressive throughout.
Although the free-to-download apps allow users to view their existing office files, users will need to purchase an Office 365 subscription if they would like to create new documents or edit existing ones, starting at £79.99 per year.
Who is it for?
If you already subscribe to Office 365, it’s a no brainer; you’re already paying to run office on 5 computers & tablets so the Office for iPad app is a nice freebie. Those without an Office 365 subscription, however, may see this as a steep investment. Here are some of alternatives:
Documents To Go
This comes in a standard version (£6.99) and a premium version (£11.99). The main difference between the two is that the premium version allows users to create PowerPoint presentations rather than just view. Here are some of the plus points:
Compatible with Cloud services e.g. iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive
One purchase includes both iPhone and iPad versions – If you are an owner of both, this could be a worthwhile investment
Free desktop version available for synchronisation
This free app from Google allows you to create and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint files for free. Once you sign in with your Google account, documents can be saved to your Google Drive which can then be accessed from any PC when you log in to Google. Here are some of the plus points:

A recent investigation by the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office has found that 1 in 10 second hand drives still contain data from the original owner. Do you really know happens to your used equipment ?
How can you prevent this happening to you ?
There are several free tools available that can run through the drive to permanently remove the data, one of our favourite is eraser. These tools can be time consuming and you do have to be careful when using them to make sure you run them on the correct drive.
Another option is physical drive destruction. You can do this yourself or get a specialist company to do this for you. If you want to do
it yourself, remove the drive, unscrew the casing to expose the disks, put your goggles on and smash them to pieces. You data is now gone !
If you get a specialist company to destroy your drive for you, they can collect from you and provide you with a certificate to say the drive has been shredded.

The sports partnership, which encourages physical activity to be part of everybody’s life in the county, has recently moved onto the Battlefield Business Park, where Start has its office.
“We were approached by Energize to configure and install a small business server and network all pcs, laptops and printers in their new headquarters,” said Chris Walker, technician at Start.
“The work was undertaken to ensure that on the day they moved in all systems would be automatically configured and there would be minimal disruption,” he explained.
“While the office move was in progress we provided assistance such as transferring all files and outlook data, including emails and contacts, and our team was on hand to answer any questions and provide mobile phone support.”
